The South African minister of trade and industry, Mandisi Mpahlwa, seeks to improve consumer protection in online gambling. Developing a policy on online gambling is part of a consumer protection plan, which will also include regulation of consumer credit and assessing the impact of liquor and online gambling on consumers. Currently, online gambling is regulated by local gaming laws in each province. The Electronic Communications and Transactions Act relates to the issues of online gaming, but does not fully cover all the elements of this relatively new business.
Mpahlwa said that consumer protection and education is essential to creating a competitive economy. The policy, he says, allows better consumer legislation. The Department of Trade and Industry published the policy in 2004 for public comment, and it is now eligible to be enacted into law.
